March 18 Lecture, “Native American Ranchos in Northern California”

Prof. Damian Bacich of San Jose State University will present a Zoom lecture at 7 PM on March 18,”Native American Ranchos in Northern California.”

Dr. Bacich is the founder of the California Frontier Project (www.californiafrontier.net) aimed at sharing resources for understanding of the cultural legacy of early California.

The story of modern land ownership in California begins with Spanish and Mexican land grants to soldiers and settlers, which eventually developed into the original California ranchos. A little-known fact is that during the 19th century a small number of Native Americans also requested and received land grants to create their own ranchos. Dr. Bacich will discuss how native people obtained grants, and include stories of Indian ranchos in Northern California, including nearby Rancho Olompali which is now a California State Park.

This free event is sponsored by Sonoma Petaluma Parks {SPParks}. To register, send an email by March 8th tspparks_events@sonomaparks.org
